About Abbie

Abbie

Whether shooting a seasoned musician or a fresh-faced teenager, Abbie’s images always depict a type of notoriety in her subjects that makes you want to know more. Abbie has always believed that a subject has to be SEEN as a person of interest in order to be portrayed as such, and that this rule should apply to anyone in front of a camera lens. When asked about her method of photographing people, she says, “Shoot them all like they’re getting a spot in Rolling Stone, even if the photo only ends up on their Mom’s fridge.”

Raised in California and schooled in Utah, Abbie discovered her love of imaging while taking high school photo courses. After being given a strict but faithful teacher, she found herself learning out of college photography texts and working an after-school job at a local photo lab to keep up with her abounding obsession. Abbie took first place in the VICA Utah photography competition before graduating high school in 2002.

The early 2000′s were a transitional time for photography, and most of the college programs weren’t offering any digital education upon graduation, so she sought out a hands-on approach in the workplace instead, and began making her way up the ladder at a local Utah studio. Abbie’s early twenties brought a myriad of job titles – she worked as a finisher, retoucher, printer, and staff photographer by day, but spent her nights developing her artistic eye through personal projects and concert shooting. “I would stay at the studio after hours to work on my own stuff while off the clock, but I’d end up spending the night. I’d lock up and leave around 6am, only to come back to work at 10.”

Music has always been a driving force behind her work, and Abbie recalls receiving her first “boombox” on her fifth birthday, and how music would forever shape her life and the way she sees and hears the world around her. “Without any musical talent to call my own, I revel in lending my sight to a musician’s sound. The least I can do is give them some kind of cool image in exchange for all of the inspiration they’ve provided me over the years…”

Abbie went pro in 2005 and received her Master of Photography certificate as well as Portrait of the Year from WPPI (Wedding and Portrait Photographers International) in 2006. In September of 2008, Abbie published INITIUM, her first book of photographs. Her work has won numerous awards and has been featured in magazines such as American Photo, Rangefinder and Popular Photography, and is also in the private collections of many of the bands featured on this site.

When she doesn’t have a camera in hand, Abbie enjoys finding new shooting locations, riding her bicycle, eating delicious mexican food, roadtrips to scenic destinations, sleep, cutting images out of her magazine stack, and singing in the car. Her heroes include Annie Leibovitz, Herb Ritts, David Lachapelle, Elvira, and Cher.

Abbie is currently residing and shooting in Salt Lake City, as well as traveling to wherever her talent and skills are needed.
